What is Five S
Five S is a philosophy or methodology to address workplace organization. It stresses that work areas should be organized, free of clutter, efficient, safe, and pleasant to work in. It is considered a cornerstone for companies pursuing Lean Enterprise. It lays the groundwork and develops the discipline necessary to support the successful implementation of other Lean concepts throughout an organization.

What types of businesses benefit from a Five S program?
Manufacturing and industrial plants come to mind first, as those are the businesses that typically realize the greatest benefits. However, all types of businesses and all areas within a business will realize benefits from implementing a Five S program.

The Five S's - an English translation:

1. Sort -- clear the work area; keep handy only what’s needed
2. Set in Order -- a place for everything, and everything in its place
3. Shine -- regular cleaning and maintenance
4. Standardize -- everyone doing things the same way
5. Sustain -- ingraining the 5S's into the culture
